When parsing Spotlight mdssvc RPC packets, one encoded data structure is a key-value style dictionary where the keys are character strings, and the values can be any of the supported types in the mdssvc protocol. Due to a lack of type checking in callers of the dalloc_value_for_key() function, which returns the object associated with a key, a caller may trigger a crash in talloc_get_size() when talloc detects that the passed-in pointer is not a valid talloc pointer. With an RPC worker process shared among multiple client connections, a malicious client or attacker can trigger a process crash in a shared RPC mdssvc worker process, affecting all other clients this worker serves.","provenance":"source","from":"CVE.org"},"summary":{"text":"A type confusion flaw in Samba's mdssvc RPC service for Spotlight, shipped in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, arises because callers of dalloc_value_for_key() do not check value types in the Spotlight dictionary structure. An attacker with network access can send crafted mdssvc RPC packets, requiring no authentication or user interaction, to crash a worker process that is shared among multiple client connections, disrupting service for all clients it serves.","provenance":"ai","model":"claude-haiku-5-5","generatedAt":"2026-10-29T07:22:35Z"},"cvss":{"score":5.3,"severity":"MEDIUM","version":"3.1","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L","provenance":"source","from":"CVE.org CNA"},"epss":{"score":0.61199,"percentile":0.99159,"date":"2026-10-29","provenance":"source"},"kev":null,"vulncheckKev":null,"exploited":false,"otx":{"pulseCount":0,"pulses":[],"provenance":"machine"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-843","name":"Access of Resource Using Incompatible Type"}],"references":[{"url":"https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2023:6667","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_REDHAT"]},{"url":"https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2023:7139","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_REDHAT"]},{"url":"https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2024:0423","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_REDHAT"]},{"url":"https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2024:0580","tags":["vendor-advisory","x_refsource_REDHAT"]},{"url":"https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2023-34967","tags":["vdb-entry","x_refsource_REDHAT"]},{"url":"https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2222794","tags":["issue-tracking","x_refsource_REDHAT"]},{"url":"https://www.samba.org/samba/security/CVE-2023-34967.html","tags":[]},{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/BPCSGND7LO467AJGR5DYBGZLTCGTOBCC/","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/package-announce@lists.fedoraproject.org/message/OT74M42E6C36W7PQVY3OS4ZM7DVYB64Z/","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://security.netapp.com/advisory/ntap-20230731-0010/","tags":["x_transferred"]},{"url":"https://www.debian.org/security/2023/dsa-5477","tags":["x_transferred"]}],"techniques":[],"reports":[],"affected":[],"advisories":[],"euvd":{"id":"EUVD-2023-39006","url":"https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/EUVD-2023-39006","exploited":false,"exploitedSince":null,"provenance":"source"},"exploits":[],"exploitSources":null,"exploitRefs":[],"flow":[],"timeline":[{"date":"2023-07-20","kind":"published","label":"Published (CVE.org)","url":"https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2023-34967","provenance":"source"}],"speed":{"daysToPublicExploit":null,"firstExploitFrom":null,"daysToKev":null},"priority":{"score":23.5,"factors":[{"name":"In a KEV catalog","points":0.0,"detail":"not listed"},{"name":"Recent KEV listing","points":0.0,"detail":"not listed"},{"name":"Known ransomware use","points":0.0,"detail":"not known"},{"name":"EPSS percentile","points":19.83,"detail":"percentile 0.9916"},{"name":"Named in threat reports","points":0.0,"detail":"0 reports"},{"name":"Public exploit code","points":0.0,"detail":"none found"},{"name":"Mentioned in OTX pulses","points":0.0,"detail":"0 pulses"},{"name":"CVSS severity","points":3.71,"detail":"base score 5.3"},{"name":"End-of-life product","points":0.0,"detail":"supported or unknown"}]},"lineage":{"children":[{"from":"CVE-2023-34967","to":"CVE-2023-42464","relation":"related","confidence":"low","kind":"lineage","evidence":[{"kind":"text","provenance":"source","relation":"related","quote":"This issue is similar to CVE-2023-34967.","from":"CVE.org","in":"CVE-2023-42464"}]}]}}
