Leafminer: New Espionage Campaigns Targeting Middle Eastern Regions
Symantec also observed attempts by Leafminer to scan for the Heartbleed vulnerability (CVE-2014-0160) from an attacker-controlled IP address.
OpenSSL · OpenSSL
The OpenSSL TLS and DTLS implementations in the OpenSSL library mishandle Heartbeat Extension packets, causing a buffer over-read in the d1_both.c and t1_lib.c components. A remote attacker with no authentication and no user interaction can send crafted Heartbeat packets to read sensitive information from process memory, such as private keys, provided the affected versions (1.0.1 before 1.0.1g) are in use.
The (1) TLS and (2) DTLS implementations in OpenSSL 1.0.1 before 1.0.1g do not properly handle Heartbeat Extension packets, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory via crafted packets that trigger a buffer over-read, as demonstrated by reading private keys, related to d1_both.c and t1_lib.c, aka the Heartbleed bug.
First seen exploited 2 years after disclosure. Public exploit code (PoC-in-GitHub) was available the same day.
CISA KEV listing is when exploitation was confirmed, not necessarily the first attack.
