Linux · Kernel
The Linux kernel's memory management code in mm/gup.c, in versions 2.x through 4.x before 4.8.3, contains a race condition in its handling of the copy-on-write (COW) feature. A local user with low privileges can exploit this to write to a read-only memory mapping and gain elevated privileges, requiring local access and an attacker who can run code on the system.
Race condition in mm/gup.c in the Linux kernel 2.x through 4.x before 4.8.3 allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging incorrect handling of a copy-on-write (COW) feature to write to a read-only memory mapping, as exploited in the wild in October 2016, aka "Dirty COW."
First seen exploited 23 days before it was disclosed. Public exploit code (Exploit-DB) was available 22 days before disclosure.
CISA KEV listing is when exploitation was confirmed, not necessarily the first attack.
