Docker Desktop Community Edition Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Docker · Desktop Community Edition

Summary

Docker Desktop Community Edition, prior to version 2.1.0.1, contains an incorrect permission assignment for a critical resource in its Windows credential helper location under %PROGRAMDATA%\DockerDesktop\version-bin\. A local user with low privileges can place a malicious docker-credential-wincred.exe in that directory, which is then executed when an administrator or service account authenticates with Docker, restarts it, or runs 'docker login', and this requires user interaction from that privileged account.

Official description · NVD

Docker Desktop Community Edition before 2.1.0.1 allows local users to gain privileges by placing a Trojan horse docker-credential-wincred.exe file in %PROGRAMDATA%\DockerDesktop\version-bin\ as a low-privilege user, and then waiting for an admin or service user to authenticate with Docker, restart Docker, or run 'docker login' to force the command.
