The Tortoise and The Malwahare
We assess that Teal Kurma has likely continued leveraging major CVEs in its current campaigns, particularly ones with publicly available proof-of-concept code such as CVE-2021-44228, CVE-2021-21974, and CVE-2022-0847.
Linux · Kernel
The Linux kernel's pipe buffer handling has a flaw in which the "flags" member of the new pipe buffer structure is not properly initialized in the copy_page_to_iter_pipe and push_pipe functions, so it can hold stale values. A local attacker with low privileges and no user interaction could exploit this to write to page-cache pages backed by read-only files, thereby escalating their privileges on the system.
A flaw was found in the way the "flags" member of the new pipe buffer structure was lacking proper initialization in copy_page_to_iter_pipe and push_pipe functions in the Linux kernel and could thus contain stale values. An unprivileged local user could use this flaw to write to pages in the page cache backed by read only files and as such escalate their privileges on the system.
First seen exploited 46 days after disclosure. Public exploit code (Metasploit) was available 18 days before disclosure.
CISA KEV listing is when exploitation was confirmed, not necessarily the first attack.
