Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Write Vulnerability

Linux · Kernel

Summary

The Linux kernel's uvcvideo media driver mishandles frames of type UVC_VS_UNDEFINED during format parsing in uvc_parse_format, because those frames are left out of the frame buffer size calculation in uvc_parse_streaming, which can result in out-of-bounds writes. Exploitation depends on the attacker having local access with low privileges and no user interaction is needed.

Official description · NVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: uvcvideo: Skip parsing frames of type UVC_VS_UNDEFINED in uvc_parse_format This can lead to out of bounds writes since frames of this type were not taken into account when calculating the size of the frames buffer in uvc_parse_streaming.

MITRE CTID mapping of the KEV entry · primary impact

By creating or modifying a USB video device, an attacker can send an undefined video frame to trigger an out-of-bounds write, leading to privilege escalation and potential arbitrary code execution.
